TOXIC Energy Drinks

Since as early as the 1900 Energy drinks have been consumed. But back in the early 1900 they did NOT have the many harmful synthetic chemicals and artificial sweetners that we have now.
Many people have died from drinking these popular Energy Drinks. The  primary reason for people dying is because of the TOXIC ingredients and the caffeine overdose.
Emergency rooms across the country have seen a dramatic spike in caffeine overdoses, up from 1,128 in 2005 to 16,055 in 2008 and 13,114 in 2009, according to a recent report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Click here for more info

In December 1984, Public Citizen Health Research Group petitioned FDA to ban the use of ten widely used food, drug or cosmetic dyes. On January 22, 1985, we sued the government to remove these dyes, all of which have been shown to cause cancer, from the market. The FDA has never found none of these dyes safe for all uses but all have remained on the market pending resolution of their “provisionally listed” status.

Let us first take a look at the time line of when the first energy drink was produced and by who was the formulator.
1901 – The Scottish drink Irn-Bru is considered the first energy drink, produced in 1901 as (Iron Brew)
1929 – Lucozade Energy from the UK was originally introduced as a hospital drink for aiding the recovery. In the early 1980s, it was promoted as an energy drink for “replenishing lost energy.”
1966 – The first drink marketed as being designed to improve the performance of athletes and sports stars arrived in the sixties. In 1966 Gatorade was invented for the football team at the University of Florida, known as the Gators — hence its name, Gatorade. Designed to aid hydration and lengthen performance
levels.  Gatorade has been known as an energy drink and it is safer than many energy drinks.
1985 – Jolt Cola was introduced in the United States. Its marketing strategy centered on the drink’s caffeine content, billing it as a means to promote wakefulness. The initial slogan was, “All the sugar and twice the caffeine.”
1987 – The Austrian entrepreneur Dietrich Mateschitz created Red Bull. an Austrian entrepreneur. Red Bull became far better known, and a worldwide best seller.
1995 – PepsiCo launched Josta, the first energy drink introduced by a major US beverage company (one that had interests outside just energy drinks).
1998 – RC Cola released it’s answer to Josta although it was short lived when it was compaired to Jolt and rumors of overdoing kids were reported.
2001 – Coca-Cola marketed two Powerade brand energy drinks in bullet-shaped, screw-top aluminum bottle cans produced by Exal Corporation of Youngstown,Ohio.
In 2007 energy drink powders and effervescent tablets were introduced, in the form of a tablet or powder that can be added to water.
The energy drink market became a $5.4 billion dollar market in 2007, and both Goldman Sachs and Mintel predict that it will hit $10 billion by 2010. Major companies’ such as Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Molson, and Labatt have tried to match smaller companies’ innovative and different approach, with marginal success.
So as you can see energy drinks have become a modern day phenomenon. The questions is
how healthy are energy drinks and are there any health risks?
These are the most common ingredients found in energy drinks:
– Artificial colors – These are artificial dyes like Yellow #5 and #6 and Red #40 known to cause Tumors, Chromasomal damage and more. see above chart
– Artificial Sweetners – Many energy drinks contain artificial sweeteners like Splenda, Aspartame, Neotame. See chart Below
– Caffeine – Is the most widely used drug on the planet and has been used for centuries for it’s stimulating effects.
– Taurine – An amino acid your body naturally produces. Helps regulate heartbeat, muscle contractions, and energy levels
– Guarana – Comes from plants native to South America. Amazonians have used it for a long time to increase alertness and energy. It’s more dense in caffeine than coffee beans
– BVitamins – These are essentially the things that help you convert food to energy, like sugar which is found in abundance in energy drinks. **Warning** B12 Cyanocobalamin is bound to Cyanide molecule
– Ginseng – An adaptogenic herb, is known to increase energy, has some anti-fatigue components, supposedly relieves stress, and increase memory.
– Ginkco Biloba – This ingredient is named after the rare tree it originates from. It is believed to help with memory retention, concentration, circulation, acts as an anti-depressant, and even shows signs of helping people with Alzheimer’s.
– L-Carnitine – An amino acid usually created by your liver and kidneys. This helps your metabolism and energy levels.
– Sugars – Glucose is the body’s preferred fuel. Most of all energy drinks contain a ton of sugar.
– Anti-oxidants – Are things that help your body gracefully recover from the damage of free radicals. Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant. Some of the energy drinks contain them.
– Glucuronolactone (DGL) – Occurs naturally in the human body as glucose is broken down by the liver. All connective tissue contains this compound.
– Yerba Mate – This substance is derived from leaves of a shrub. It is a natural source of caffeine, however some people can experiance negative effects like head aches.
– Creatine – is naturally obtained by eating meat. Creatine helps with supplying energy to the muscles and is usually found in energy drinks and products that are marketed to body builders.
– Acai Berry – This ingredient (pronounced ah-sah-ee) comes from the Acai Palm tree which is found in South America. The berries are rich in anti-oxidants.
– Milk Thistle – This ingredient mainly found in a few ot the energy drinks. It is used as a liver detoxifying agent.
– L-theanine – is an amino acid that according to recent studies has shown to calm the brain to enhance concentration.
– Inositol – was once considered a B vitamin, but has since been removed from this classification because the human body is able to produce it’s own supply without the need for supplementation through the diet.

(NaturalNews) reports that we now have tens of millions energy drinks now being consumed daily. What’s not to like about having more energy and alertness, particularly if it comes from beverages which often tout herbal and other “natural” ingredients? As it turns out, there is a very great deal not to like – including unhealthy ingredients and potentially dangerous health consequences.
Some of the more common unwelcome side effects of energy drinks include elevated heart rates, hypertension, anxiety, headaches and interrupted sleep patterns. Earlier this year, a report in the medical journal Pediatrics warned against energy drinks and cited potential harms including heart palpitations, seizures, strokes and even sudden death.
Late last year, poison control centers started tracking energy drink overdoses and side effects nationwide. 677 cases occurred from October through December. The chart’s list of reported energy drink-related symptoms included seizures, hallucinations, rapid heart rate, chest pain, high blood pressure and irritability.
The two most common ingredients found in energy drinks are sugar and caffeine; both of which provide temporary stimulation but can result in actual long term energy loss due to stressing the adrenal glands and causing adrenal fatigue.
Just one of a huge number of health risks caused by processed sugar is the risk of diabetes, a disease which has reached epidemic proportions in the U.S. Very large amounts of sugar can ultimately overwhelm the pancreas, the organ which generates insulin to offset sugar intake. If the pancreas becomes “worn out” by being overworked from too much sugar, diabetes can begin.
Some energy drinks contain up to 7 times as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. While small amounts of caffeine are not generally considered dangerous, too much can over stimulate the central nervous system and can dangerously elevate blood pressure and heart rate. Caffeine is also addictive and withdrawal symptoms include headaches and irritability. Caffeine also causes a loss in valuable B vitamins which are needed for “normal” energy creation.
When sugar is not used, dangerous artificial sweeteners are employed. Perhaps the most dangerous is aspartame; though increasingly, the sugar substitute of choice has become sucralose. Sucralose is a chlorinated organic compound, a chemical group which includes several compounds known to be harmful to animals and plants and which has been linked to birth defects and other prenatal conditions. The body does not recognize artificial sweeteners like sucralose as food, but instead essentially processes them as toxins.
